The palace was built in 1614-15 with a project by Alvise Pisani, and in the following century the building was expanded until reaching the Grand Canal. The remodelling was conducted by Girolamo Frigimelica, architect of the Pisani family. The purpose of the building was purely celebratory: the noble Pisani family, at that time one of the richest ones in the city, wanted a palace worthy of their greatness. At the time of the Republic of Venice the palace Pisani was the biggest private building in the city, second only to Palazzo Ducale, with its magnificent furniture and beautiful paintings from famous artists (Tiziano, Tintoretto and many others). In 1816 the Pisanis had to sell it to solve their debts. Between 1897 and 1921 the municipality of Venice became the only owner of the palace and since 1940 it has been the permanent venue of the Conservatoire, and today one of the venues of the Music Biennale.
