The Carnival of Venice

C.C.I programme for the Carnival 2010

BocoloApril 25, 2010 - Saint Mark's day

On this day it is an appealing and romantic tradition that every man in Venice gives a single rose-bud, the "bòcolo" to his beloved lady..
There is a tradition unique to Venice that takes place on 25th April, the feast of Saint Mark the Evangelist, patron of Venice. Venetian men give a long-stemmed red rose to their beloved, and 'Bòcolo' is the name of the rose.

May 23, 2009 - Ascension Day of Festa della Sensa

The Day of the marriage between Venice and the sea. In olden days the Doge would ride out in his ship, the "Bucintoro", and toss a ring of gold into the waters off the Lido.
Today the ceremony is not as magnificent as in previous centuries, but the symbolism of the mystic marriage to the sea is still evident and is certainly still valid today. The Mayor of Venice, civic dignitaries and religious and military representatives leave Saint Mark's Square and sail to the Port of S. Nicolò where the ritual ring throwing takes place.
May 31, 2009  - Vogalonga

VogalongaThis year will be the 33th Vogalonga edition, a rowing marathon all around Venice and the Lagoon. The number of participants, especially from abroad, has continued to grow, with entries totalling up to 1500 boats. In the morning a large number of boats of every type and shape gather in St. Mark's Basin opposite the Doge's Palace to await the start; they then set off on a roughly 30 kilometre long course that winds its way among the lagoon islands before returning to Venice along the Rio di Cannaregio to finish at the Punta della Dogana.

this year in PISA, June, 2009. - Palio of the Ancient Maritime Republics
Palio
A competition that takes places every year between the four ancient
'Republiche Marinare' (Amalfi, Genova, Pisa, Venezia), symbolically contest the leadership of the sea that was once the cause of many great struggles, particularly between Venice and Genova.

The opening of the regatta sees an impressive historical parade where hundreds of people parade in costume, bearing the standards of the ancient republics. The spectacular event is preceded by a great historical pageant of 400 boaters with participants in period costumes: flags and festoons, trumpets and drums, horses and sedan-chairs add glamour to the solemn procession.

RedentoreJuly 18-19, 2009 - Redentore

The Redentore is surely one of the most spectacular Venetian festivals and perhaps the most loved by Venetians, thanks to the spectacular firework display.
The Redentore is one of the Venetians' most treasured festivities, and is a tourist attraction thanks to the spectacular firework display in the evening, I when hundreds of well illuminated boats, decorated with boughs and coloured balloons, begin congregating in Saint Mark's Basin.

VogalongaSeptember 6, 2009 - Historical Regata

Water is the element that most characterises Venice and it is no coincidence that
the most famous and spectacular festivity in the city takes place on the waters of the Grand Canal.  It began in 1315 with the Doge Giovanni Soranzo to celebrate the glory of the Serenissima. The festival was a way to honour foreign dignitaries visiting the city, or celebrate a military victory. Today the Regata Storica takes place on the first Sunday of September and has two different components: the Historical Procession and the 'Regatta' races.

LaSaluteNovember 21, 2009  - Madonna della Salute

Thousands of people cross the votive bridge and reach the majestic Salute Church to give thanks and ask the Virgin Mary to keep them in good health.
